Motivational Interviewing
Motivational Interviewing is a person-centered couns
eling technique utilized to elicit behavior change. This practice session w
ill focus on developing a collaboration relationship with individuals to ex
plore and resolve ambivalence to support change aligning with one’s own per
sonal values and concerns. The session will build upon a prerequisite eLear
ning course to deeper explore and demonstrate the principles of Motivationa
l Interviewing.

It is *HIGHLY RECOMMMENDED* you to take a pre-learning course prior to this in-person course. A basic know ledge of MI will be needed for this training, and that will not be covered in this in-person training. TRAINERS:
span>Eileen Swoboda, MSW, LISW, has worked in the child
welfare system for 30 years. She has worked in group and residential care.
She began her career as a foster care worker with both local and unaccompa
nied refugee minor children from Southeast Asia. She has provided counselin
g services to children and families with multiple concerns at Lutheran Serv
ices in Iowa and, currently, at Compass Clinical Associates in Des Moines.
Her special interest is working with play therapy with children and their p
arents, and she incorporates a trauma informed perspective focused on build
ing resilience. She has conducted numerous trainings and workshops across I
owa and provided training and consultation for churches, schools, attorneys
, Juvenile Court professionals, NASW, Visiting Nurse Services, DHS and vari
ous family service agencies. Since 2000, Eileen has served as adjunct facul
ty at the University of Iowa Graduate School of Social Work, where she deve
loped her appreciation and use of Motivational Interviewing.
Registration will begin at 12:30pm. Train
ing will begin promptly at 1pm. This training is scheduled until 4pm.
Please note: Priority seating is provided to staff working w ithin one of the current DHS child welfare service contracts, including: Fa mily Centered Services (FCS); Qualified Residential Treatment Program (QRTP ) / Group Foster Care; Child Welfare Emergency Services (CWES): Aftercare S ervices; Supervised Apartment Living (SAL); Recruitment, Retention, Trainin g and Support Services (RRTS); Parent Partners; Foster Care Youth Council. If you do not work within one of the current DHS child welfare services con tract, you may be bumped from the course and placed on a wait list.
